First, David Beckham came out as a huge Lego enthusiast, then the BBC used little Lego characters to re-create great moments in the Winter Olympics. Now comes The Lego Movie: funny, inventive and bound to boost sales of the interlocking plastic bricklets even further. The boys from Meccano must be beside themselves with envy. The Lego Movie is loudly and exuberantly wacky from the off, its hero a Lego everyman called Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt), who works on a construction site.

As a cheery construction worker called Emmet (Chris Pratt) becomes embroiled in a plot to stop evil President Business (Will Ferrell), the man sitting next to me at the screening kept turning to his neighbour and exclaiming: “This is awesome!” He was so enjoying the layers-upon-layers of irony that I honestly began to fear for his sanity. There are a lot of under-stimulated adults in the world. The Lego Movie is a nostalgia trip designed to blow their minds.
Despite the presence of Abraham Lincoln, Batman, Shakespeare, Wonder Woman and a wizard called Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman) — but not, alas, a tiny David Beckham, whose endorsement came too late for a part — it is humble, hapless Emmet who leads the forces of good against the forces of evil, embodied by President Business (Will Ferrell). With the help of a swivel-headed enforcer, Good Cop/Bad Cop (Liam Neeson), President Business’s dastardly plan is to rebuild the city of Bricksburg as a characterless, functional Utopia — think Milton Keynes, made of plastic.
Emmet’s job is to stop him, and he is helped by a gorgeous mini-figure called WildStyle (Elizabeth Banks), part of a super-race called Master Builders, who can take apart any pile of bricks and rebuild them as something else. The computer-generated action is dazzlingly relentless, and sometimes so surreal as to be incoherent, but it doesn’t matter in the slightest. That said, kids will love it, too. The precise and whooshy CGI sits perfectly with the story, which delivers a stream of well-rounded characters we can both care for and chuckle over. The clear and undisputed leader of the pack is Batman (Will Arnett), a dark and brooding show-off, who records bad thrash metal music in his spare time and takes the gullible Star Wars crew for a ride.
It goes without saying that this is one prolonged product-placement opportunity. True, the plot and themes, while inventive, aren’t especially original either: anal-retentive play; the fetishisation of masculinity; happy-clappy fascism; worlds within worlds. In terms of pop-cultural exploration, the script goes where the Toy Story trilogy and Shrek — even The Wizard of Oz — have gone before. I suppose some cynics will see it as one gigantic exercise in product placement, and there’s no denying that, but it is so wittily done (the directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, also made Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs) that actually that doesn’t matter, either.
Watch The Lego Movie Online Everything is perfect in Bricksburg until the evil Lord Business, who really does mean business, tries to end the world with an army of robots and his mysterious Kragle super-weapon.It’s jam-packed with fun after Emmet gets mixed up in a prophecy and accidentally finds a lost red brick called The Piece Of Resistance. When it gets stuck to his back everyone thinks he is a hero.
There are crazy models, including Emmet’s double-decker couch and the robot gnashing garbage truck, and amazing worlds such as Cloud Cuckooland, which is like a little girl’s imagination blasted on screen — all lollipops and rainbows.Yet the climax offers a genuine (visual) jolt. It was risky to shoot the final scenes in such a homespun, bargain-basement way. I won’t spoil it any further — luckily, the gamble pays off. Are ordinary people special? The film-makers seem truly to believe that the answer is yes. Which is why, though not everything about The Lego Movie is awesome, you’ll leave the cinema wearing a real smile.
